Lost Gold
and Homecoming
Festival in Minerva is in June and the Rotary Club is sponsoring its second
annual juried craft exhibit.
The
Algonquin Festival in Carrollton is in the
fall; Great Trail Festival on Labor Day weekend is a time to show the kids what
life was like in pioneer days, and at this writing Minerva is negotiating for a
250 year old anniversary reenactment of a French and Indian War battle.
The Yankee Peddler Craft Show is in Canal Fulton the 2nd thru the 4th
weekends in September. Check the
Carroll County
website for
exact times and dates.
WHAT'S DOING?
A
short line railroad called Minerva
Scenic Railway runs from Minerva's train station (a mile
south on Rt. 183) to the village of Bayard and return (about an hour
ride). It has several stops in town, and you can get off, shop, and
catch the next train back (or walk if you wish).
Check out the charming shops on Market St. Gourmet coffee and antique clocks
at Father Time at the north end of Market St. Henri's Cloud Nine is widely known
as THE place for wedding and formal women's dresses, with clients traveling from
as far as Cleveland and Pittsburgh. And for the doll aficionado there is a
specialty shop devoted to dolls.
There is a Mini-mall a mile or two south on Rt. 183 near the train
station, at the site of the old granery. In continuous renovation,
it is full of historic artifacts
One-pound buckeyes at Sheri's Sweets on Line St. and 1 pound
chocolate bombs at Ulman's bakery next door.
Two
public golf courses are available very close: Great Trail and
Edgewater Courses are both pleasant. Clearview
Public Course is only about 15 minutes away on Rte. 30. Hills
of Carroll County make golf or hiking an interesting challange.
Recommended Restaurants:
-
Spread Eagle Tavern in Hanoverton
(about a 25-30 minute drive) is an excellent restaurant that dates
back to construction time of the Ohio/Erie Canal and was a lodging
place and watering hole. Beautifully restored, it is an elegant
place to dine.
-
J.C. Wines is about 45 minutes drive to East Springfield on Rt. 43. They
make their own wines and the chef is a genius in the kitchen. We love the
Chardonnay. Reservations suggested at both.
-
Grinders and Such lies on the
north side of Rt. 30 just in front of Minerva
Cheese where you will find excellent and reasonably priced
cheeses to take home too.
-
Mezaluna Italian Eatery is on Rt. 30 west of Market St.
-
Normandy is an eatery and watering
hole on South Market St. You can disembark the train here for
a glass of wine or a brew on their deck.
-
Little Forest Inn is a pleasant rustic place about 4 miles south on Rt.
183 just south of Malvern.
