WHAT'S DOING?
A
short line railroad runs
from Minerva's train station a couple of miles south on Rt. 183 to
the village of Bayard and return (about an hour ride). There are opportunities
to stop at various places along the route and catch the next train
to continue your journey (no additional charge). A "conductor"
will punch your ticket as in the old days, and if you ask
us for a voucher you will ride for $8 instead of $10. Children
ride for $5.
Check out the charming shops on Market St. Gourmet
coffee and antique clocks at Father Time at the north end of
Market St. Henri's Cloud Nine is widely known as THE place
for wedding and formal women's dresses, with clients traveling from
as far as Cleveland and Pittsburgh. And for the doll aficionado there
is a specialty shop devoted to dolls.
A mini-mall is a mile or two south on Rt. 183 near
the train station and some interesting exhibits from the big train
times in the United States are viewable in the old granery building
that serves as the train station. even if you have seen the stateion
before, you will want to take a peak when you are here.
One-pound buckeyes ass well as assorted chocolate
treats are for sale at Sheri's Sweets on Short St. and they
are developing some interesting displays in their new location. When
you visit Glenking Cabin, you will be able to sample a before-bed
chocolate pine tree.
Two public golf courses are available very close:
Great Trail and Edgewater
Courses are both pleasant places to whack the devilish round
sphere. Clearview
Public Course is only about 15 minutes away on Rte. 30.
One place not to be missed is Minerva
Cheese which has an onsite retail store for cheeses and
other delicacies. They were listed #1 for baby Swiss worldwide a couple
of years ago.
Recommended Restaurants:
-
Spread
Eagle Tavern in Hanoverton (about a 25-30 minute drive)
is an excellent restaurant that dates back to construction time
of the Ohio/Erie Canal and was a lodging place and watering hole.
-
J.C. Wines is about 45 minutes
drive to East Springfield on Rt. 43. They make their own wines
and the chef is a genius in the kitchen. We love the Chardonnay.
Reservations suggested at both.
-
Grinders
and Such lies on the north side of Rt. 30 just in front
of Minerva Cheese. Excellent reasonably priced cheeses to take
home too.
-
Mezaluna Italian Eatery is
on Rt. 30 west of Market St. and specializes in Italian dishes
and has a well-stocked bar for your pleasure. Open Tuesday through
Saturday.
-
Normandy is an eatery and watering
hole on South Market St. next to the railroad tracks.
- You will find sample menus in the cabin reference book when you
arrive.
